Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik by Frege is his second academic work published in 1884 after Begriffsschrift (1879). This masterpiece examines the foundations of arithmetics in informal language. In the first part Frege attacks psychologism in arithmetics, especially Mill 's view, and in the later part presents his own definition of number: a number is a class of equinumeous classes.

For a long time, Frege 's works have strong influence on Analytic philosophy, but only indirectly through Russell and Wittgenstein 's works. This book is the first work of Frege translated in English in 1950 by John Austin (66 years after its first publication in German!) that is still considered as 'the definitive translation' in English-speaking world. Two years laters, the translation of Frege 's the most important papers was published as Translations of Philosophical Writings of Gottlob Frege  (edited by Max Black and Peter Geach). There two texts were foundations to form Neo-Fregean movement in Oxford since 1950s.

Michael Dummett, a undisputable leading scholar on Frege, revealed in a interview as follows: "I read that book because I had chosen to take that paper. I was absolutely bowled over by it; I had never read anything of that q uality in my entire life. I therefore decided that I had t o read everything that this man had written". The paper mentioned is "Foundations of Modern Epistemology" created by Austin in PPE course (Politics, Philosophy and Economics), starting with Plato's Theaetetus, and finishing with Frege 's Grundlagen. The Grundlagen was translated by Austin for his teaching purpose.

The eminent position Frege has enjoyed in analytic tradition nowadays, no doubt, is thanks to Dummett. This interesting story actually started with Austin, or, to be more precise, with the translation of Grundlagen
